In
the Little League International Tournament,
double-elimination is played at most levels. The
tournament is under the direction and authority of the
Little League Baseball Tournament Committee in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania. More than 15,000 teams begin
the tournament in the various divisions, and more than
13,000 are eliminated in the first three weeks of play.
District – This
is the most basic level of play. Most District
tournaments begin around the first week of July. They
last from one to three weeks. Some large districts, or
those made up of widely dispersed teams, play in area
tournaments before advancing to a district final or
semifinal.
State, Province or Country
– This is the next major level of play.
However, in some states, provinces or countries where
there are a large number of leagues, a sub tournament is
played. State, provincial or national tournaments are
generally played around the last week of July or the
first week of August.
Region
– This is the third basic level. However,
there may be one or two pre-regional tournaments
(Section or Division Tournaments) played in some areas
before advancing to the Regional Level. Regional
Tournaments are usually played in the first or second
week of August. In most levels of play, there are eight
regional tournaments worldwide. In the Little League
Baseball Division, the regional tournaments are divided
in half, so that, in effect, there are 16 regional
tournaments worldwide.
World Series – This is
the final level of Tournament Play. There are 11 World
Series tournaments played in the Little League program:
Little League Baseball (11-12-year-olds), Junior League
Baseball (13-14-year-olds), Senior League Baseball
(14-16-year-olds), Big League Baseball
(16-18-year-olds), Girls Little League Softball
(11-12-year-olds), Girls Junior League Softball
(13-14-year-olds), Girls Senior League Softball
(14-16-year-olds), Girls Big League Softball
(16-18-year-olds), Boys Little League Softball
(9-12-year-olds), Boys Senior League Softball
(13-16-year-olds), and Boys Big League Softball
(14-18-year-olds).
The various World Series
tournaments are played during the third or fourth week
of August. |
